GENERAL INFORMATION ON COLLECTIONS
The UEF Library is an academic library open to the public and its collections are also available to all library users.
The library acquires both electronic and print resources to its collections mainly in the disciplines researched and taught at the university. The collections hold research literature, course books, periodicals, academic theses, databases, reference books, electronic publications and selected open access resources.
Furthermore, the library has several special collections and it is one of the six legal deposit libraries in Finland and a European Documentation Centre.
Information on the acquired materials is entered in the library’s data systems. You can search for both print and electronic resources in the UEF Finna. However, as an exception to the general rule, materials in certain special collections cannot be searched in the UEF Finna.
More detailed information on the principles of shaping the collections can be found from the library’s collection programme (in Finnish).
Print collections can be found from the Joensuu and Kuopio Campus Libraries and from the Kuopio University Hospital (KUH) Medical Library. The collections emphasise the university’s key fields of research and teaching on each campus as follows:
- Applied sciences and technologies (Kuopio)
- Economics and business administration (Joensuu and Kuopio)
- Education (Joensuu)
- Forest sciences (Joensuu)
- Health sciences (Kuopio)
- Humanities (Joensuu)
- Medicine (Kuopio)
- Natural sciences (Joensuu and Kuopio)
- Pharmacy (Kuopio)
- Psychology (Joensuu)
- Social sciences (Joensuu and Kuopio)
- Theology (Joensuu)
The majority of print resources are shelved in open stacks and can be checked out from the library. Reading room copies can be borrowed overnight or for the weekend. Print materials can be sent from one campus library to another upon request, and they can also be sent as interlibrary loans to other libraries. Please see Borrowing services for more information.
The electronic collections are comprised of both licensed and free electronic resources. The E-resources include databases, online journals, e-books, online dictionaries and reference books.
As per the agreements, the licensed electronic resources are available to all library users at the campus libraries. Furthermore, the students and staff members of the University of Eastern Finland and the staff members of Kuopio University Hospital can access the resources from other facilities within the university network as well as via a remote access connection outside the university network.
Some of the e-journals cannot be accessed from all campuses due to the licensing agreements and subscription rates of the journals. However, it is possible to order article copies from these journals with the article request form.
Some e-books are available only for the holders of the University of Eastern Finland's Haka credentials, i.e. UEF user ID and password.
You do not have to log in to access free electronic resources as they are openly available to all library users.
The library tries to acquire one reading room copy of each course book and one lendable copy of the course book per ten students enrolled for the course.
Students have the possibility to reserve and borrow course books from another campus library. Reading rooms copies, however, cannot be requested from one campus library to another. Detailed information on the course books, e.g. their locations, call number and the number of copies available can be found in the UEF Finna.
