Searching tips for UEF Finna

QUICK INSTRUCTIONS FOR SEARCHING:

  • Use * for truncation
  • Write complete phrases "inside quotes"
  • Write search operators in capitals: AND OR NOT
  • The default operator between search terms is AND
  • Write OR operations in brackets

Search by subject

The quantity and precision of the search terms, along with the used language, affect the search results.

Try to do the search using words that essentially describe your search subject. Use complete words or truncate the terms using the asterisk (*).

If the results do not fulfil your needs, alter the search. In general, it can be said that when searching for international material, use more search terms and more precise expressions than when doing your searches on the library's collections.

Alternate expressions should be considered in all search methods.

 

The search results that are most similar to the search terms are listed first. The relevance sorting works well in the UEF Finna. When required, you can change the sorting order to, for example, Date descending.

A large search result can be narrowed down and defined further afterwards. For instance, you can use the Organisation section to target the search to different separate collections, such as campus libraries or electronic material.
After one search you can use the same search terms on the National Repository Library's collections and Finnish articles and international articles simply by clicking the respective tab on the search page (as shown above).

 

Article databases are essential

For thorough searches on international materials you need the user interfaces of the article databases, such as Scopus, Pubmed, Web of Science. Links to the databases can be found in the UEF Finna.
